Kilkenny is a medieval city of 24,000 people and is acclaimed internationally as a centre for craft and design. Technology, Tourism, Craft & Design and food processing are the main industries in the county. Each year Kilkenny hosts a number of international festivals and the city is a very popular tourist destination.

This medieval city is characterised by many beautifully restored buildings and winding slipways - it is small and compact enough to explore on foot, yet full of fascinating historical buildings and contemporary shops, design galleries and restaurants.

The ancient city of Kilkenny was named after a 6th century monk St Canice. His memory lives on in the beautifully restored St Canices Cathedral, built overlooking the city in the thirteenth century. Kilkenny Castle, one of the most magnificent castles in Ireland, was built by the Normans who arrived in the city during the 12th century.

Today the city is proving a very popular place to live and familys are attracted by the selection of 6 secondary schools and 10 primary schools in the city. There are further secondary schools and about 90 small-scale primary schools in rural areas throughout the county allowing a high standard of family life.

The county enjoys a mainline rail service to Dublin and road networks to the capital are improving daily.

Apart from the city the areas of principal attraction are Thomastown, Callan, Castlecomer and Gowran. Graignamanagh is situated on the River Barrow, which forms the eastern boundary of the county. The county has many sporting amenities such as seven 18-hole golf courses, Mount Juliet being foremost, Racing at Gowran Park, Fishing on the many rivers and mills around the county and of course it is the home of hurling.

There is a good supply of quality homes in all price brackets although country homes are difficult to come by, being a pleasant place to live, people don't often sell.
