Be Safe Online

Trading online should be no different to how you would respond to an advert in a local newspaper or other traditional classified advert publications.
Follow our simple tips below to avoid scammers and stay safe online!
- ALWAYS try to deal with people you can meet in person.
- NEVER accept funds via Western Union, Moneybookers or other Electronic Fund Transfer services.
- DO NOT accept bank drafts as form of payment. Fake Bank Drafts are on the increase and while banks will initially cash them, they will take the money back when the fake draft is discovered.
- NEVER give out your bank details or other personal information.
- NEVER respond directly to an an email address given in the description of an ad. Anyone who gives their email in the description is a scammer. Email replies should be sent via the Contact Avertiser form on the site only.
Remember: if it sounds too good to be true... it is a scam!
I think someone has tried to scam me. Who should I tell?
- Contact your local police station and give them details of the scam.
- Send an email to support@daft.ie listing all the details, including email addresses and any correspondence exchanged.
Our software blocks most fraudulent emails, but some can still get through. We send a warning message to our users as soon as we detect a suspicious email.
However, please remember that 99.999% of people who use Daft.ie are genuine, so there is no need to be too suspicious!
Some examples of Scams
Bank Draft
You are contacted by someone abroad who says they are really interested in your property and will send you a Bank Draft to secure a deposit.
- A Bank Draft is offered as a deposit for buying or renting a property
- The value of the Bank Draft will probably far exceed the required amount
- The scammer will ask you to wire the additional cash back to them via a money transfer service like Western Union
- You lodge the draft and in many cases banks will not realise that it is a fake until it is too late
- Once you wire that money to the scammer, it is not traceable and you will not get it back
Money transfer (Western Union or similar)
- In our experience this is always a scam.
- Property listing may be local, but landlord/owner/renter is "travelling" or "relocating" and needs you to wire money to them abroad
- Deal often seems too good to be true, price is too low, photos of property are amazing
- The scammer will ask you for a deposit before you can view the property
- Once you send money (Wire Transfer or Electronic Funds Transfer), you will not get it back
- Remember: If it sounds too good to be true it is
- DO NOT GIVE ANY DEPOSIT BEFORE VIEWING A PROPERTY
- DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY BY WIRE TRANSFER
Always remember: It's your money so if you get a bad feeling, walk away. The website www.GetSafeOnline.org is the authoritative source of free, up-to-the-second information and advice about how to keep safe and secure online.
