holding deposit

Hi. was looking for a place to rent at the end of the month,i have found a nice place but there is tenants still liviving in it,i was asked to put a holding deposit on it.Is this normal? how much should it be? as they haven't even checked my references and asked for 800 euros deposit. Thanks
