Mortgages for foreigners

Great information Retire Back.... I must look into that because yes, we have a 401(k) and an IRA over here.

For getting the AIB loan, I contacted a mortgage broker/agent over there and sent him all the usual financial information. I had got his name from a cousin of mine who also bought property in Ireland while living in the US. Through AIB, we got an offer of a loan up to 150,000. It was pretty straightforward.

It got messy after we decided on a property. The bank came back after several weeks saying the house was overvalued. We went back to the seller and got a price reduction. Six weeks had passed from deciding on the property to this point. Plus, the bank then decided I had to go to Ireland to sign some documents. Then there were some issues with having to go over and sign documents. Then my wife had to go over too etc.

Long story short, we learned a lot and are ready to do it all over again :)
