Moate Castle, nestled in County Westmeath, is a remarkable testament to Ireland's rich architectural heritage. Dating back to the early 1500s, this enchanting castle is a detached two-bay three-storey structure that exudes a sense of grandeur and history. Over the centuries, it has undergone several additions and renovations, resulting in a captivating blend of architectural styles. At the western end of the castle, a three-bay storey was added in 1720, possibly incorporating even earlier elements. This section showcases the evolution of architectural trends, providing a glimpse into the castle's fascinating past. Moreover, a two-storey bowed extension was constructed on the eastern end of the property in 1760, adding both charm and functionality to the castle's design. The castle's exterior features roughcast rendered walls, which contribute to its timeless appeal. The square-headed window openings and cut stone sills proudly display their original craftsmanship, evoking a sense of authenticity. The pitched roof, adorned with natural slate, further enhances the castle's majestic presence. Rendered chimney stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods complete the roofline. As you explore Castle Moate, you'll discover a treasure trove of architectural details. Intricate cut stone detailing, including a Sheila-na-gig—a figurative carving symbolizing life-giving powers and fertility—alongside cut stone surrounds with pointed arched window openings, adorn the walled courtyard. The castle's entrance beckons visitors with a round-headed doorcase on the north elevation of the wing. To the west, a striking cut stone block and grand doorcase welcomes you, accompanied by a timber panelled door adorned with a radial fanlight above. These elegant entrance provide a glimpse into the castle's interior and set the stage for a captivating journey through time. Situated on approximately 6 acres of meticulously maintained grounds, Castle Moate enjoys a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the outside world. Castle Moate's setting is further enhanced by an extensive collection of outbuildings. These structures add depth to the property, highlighting its historical and functional significance. Castle Moate has seven bedrooms with four dressing rooms and one downstairs bathroom. There is also a large cellar located beneath the main entrance hall in need of restoration. The castle has an adjoining wing located on the east side of the building and additional west wing which has fallen into disrepair and requires restoration. On the ground floor, you'll discover a reception hall with an original square staircase, leading to a drawing room adorned with an exquisite mantelpiece, ornate cornice, and a double sash window overlooking the front of the property. Adjacent is a sitting room boasting its own mantelpiece, cornice, and picturesque views of Moate Town. The kitchen features a multi-fuel cooker, a range of fitted units, and offers easy access to the rear garden and internal courtyard. A separate pantry adds convenience, and a family bathroom with a cast iron bath and WC completes this level. The first floor of the castle unveils a collection of enchanting bedrooms. Bedroom 1 impresses with double sash windows, a mantelpiece, and rear views. Bedroom 2 offers tranquil front garden views, while Bedroom 3 features a spacious layout, a mantelpiece, ceiling cornice, and front-facing double sash windows. Bedroom 4, tucked away, provides a cozy retreat with stunning rear garden views. These bedrooms, adorned with period charm, create an memorable experience within the castle's walls. On the second floor, there are spacious bedrooms: Bedroom 5 with a mantelpiece, ceiling cornice, and front-facing double sash windows, Bedroom 6 with a mantelpiece, ceiling cornice, an adjoining dressing room, and a serene view of the elevated garden, and Bedroom 7, a generously sized room with double sash windows, a mantelpiece, and ceiling cornice overlooking the front of the property. History Moate Castle boasts a rich and captivating history that stretches back centuries. For the past 51 years, this extraordinary residence has been lovingly occupied and maintained by the Mitchell Family, a testament to their enduring connection with this remarkable property. Originally constructed around the year 1500 by O'Melaghlin, Lord of Clancolman, Moate Castle stood as a symbol of power and prestige. In 1603, Feardorcha O'Melaghlin sold the castle and its lands to Hubert Dillon of Drumraney. However, during the Cromwellian confiscations, Hubert's son lost ownership of the castle. It then passed into the hands of a Cromwellian soldier named Humphys, who, in turn, sold his grant to John Clibborn, another soldier from the same era. Interestingly, the actual sale document from 1656 is still preserved within the castle, a tangible link to its fascinating past. The Clibborn family resided in Moate Castle for several generations until 1847 when tragedy struck. The owner at the time, John Cuthbert Clibborn, succumbed to fever contracted from famine victims. Subsequently, the castle was leased to Gilbert Nugent, who later inherited Jamestown Court. Following Nugent's occupancy, the castle saw a succession of occupants, including Thomas Wooley, a Quaker businessman, and Edward Fetherstonhaugh, who resided there briefly. In the early 20th century, Mr. Moore, the Moate postmaster, became the next occupant of the castle. Later, in the 1920s, a Mr. Gardiner, who taught at the local Protestant school, took up residence. Since then, the Mitchell Family has proudly assumed the role of custodians, continuing the legacy of Moate Castle and ensuring its preservation for future generations.
