Maynooth is a planned 18th Century town, steeped in its historical significance of being the home of the great Earls of Kildare who ruled Ireland in effect from 1316 to 1534, their presence still manifest in the town by the presence of the great ruins of the Castle of Maynooth. The National University of Ireland and the National Seminary for Ireland, St. Patricks College dominate the activities and ethos of the present day town. Nearby, Carton House, once the home of the Dukes of Leinster, now maintained and being developed by the Mallaghan family, provides another major asset to the town.
