The Lodge was formerly the Coach House, Stables and Granary of the Rosshill House, built by Lord Leitrim. Later it was acquired by Lord Ardilaun (the former Sir Benjamin Guinness) whose family home for a number of generations was Ashford Castle, some three miles away at Cong.
The aspect is westwards with a spectacular view of the Connemara Mountains. At ground floor level there is a garage and boathouse. A large wide courtyard extends along the east side and a raised terrace faces the dwelling on the west and extends along the south side. The site is bounded on the north by the conifer plantation of Coillte, which extends out on to the Big Island and the White Island Peninsula enclosing Rosshill Bay and for a considerable distance along the lakeshore.
