  • The Fine Line Between Fear and Excitement – Team Daft 12 hours to go!

As I write this I am in my bunk aboard the team daft yacht. We have 12 hours to go until our race around Ireland begins. The other competitors are all around us and I am starting to feel the fear!
I remember this feeling from before. Fear is how I have just described it but fear of what? Fear of failure? Fear of under performing? Fear of what?
Over time i have felt the fear in rowing and expedition racing, as i launched my business and in facing my blindness but the fear never comes close to the buzz that follows when it has been conquered. In fact the more intense the fear, the bigger the buzz is likely to be.
So, as I lie on my bunk I am trying to flip the fear into feelings of excitement. If I believe what I have just written then the buzz coming up is gonna be a good one! Time to sleep, we wont have much more for the next 6 days and nights!

  • Round Ireland will be a more open affair with light winds – The Irish Times – Fri, Jun 18, 2010

    By David Brannagan

SAILING: AS THE race-course basks in summer sunshine, final preparations and safety scrutinising is being completed ahead of Sunday’s mid-day start to the Conway Media Round Ireland Race at Wicklow. A fleet of 36 boats is now expected to start the race.

Fine weather but with light winds appear set to dominate all or most of the 704-mile race that could take the smaller entries up to a week to complete.

However, at least two potential entries may have issues with their IRC-handicap certificates that are required for the event…

  • Team Daft Split Forces in Preparation for the Round Ireland

As a high pressure moves over Ireland all of us in Team Daft are focused on different parts of the pre-race jobs. Mick is on the boat working through final checks before our safety inspection on thursday with the race organisers. Adam McCarthy, our software engineer is building in the speech systems so that I can interact with the instruments. And I have been collecting and packing our food and water supplies for the race. Trav is back tomorrow to work on the electronics and the marketing team are booking media appearances all the time. I am writing this in a taxi on my phone using a system that Markham Nolan set up for me and it is the reason why I have been able to update all my social media platforms from the mountains back training in norway earlier in the year, from the city centre as I collect new adventure gear or from the high seas as we brought the team daft yacht back from france. But today as we are split on our different jobs it struck me, yet again on another adventure, how important it is to have the right people on the team. We only have two on the race team but the true number in team daft has grown way beyond the two in the formal team. It is never perfect and it takes time to get things right but I think we have managed to get a team together which will result in a competitive performance in the race. Thanks everyone who has been involved so far. Almost ready!
