HISTORY The iconic Winthrop Arcade opened in March 1926, connecting Winthrop Street with Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork’s prime retail area. An article in the Cork Examiner dated 8th March 1926 highlighted the exceptional materials used in the construction of the Arcade, including marble, mosaic, mahogany, oxidised copper and decolite. Internally the elegant art deco style is reminiscent of the wonderful European arcades of the period. Almost all of the original architectural features are retained, in particular the glass dome, mahogany shop fronts and bronze display windows. Connecting the two primary retail streets in the heart of Cork city, the arcade retains all its original charm and elegance. The Winthrop Arcade was originally congured as 12 retail units.
