Historical note :
Capel street dates from the last quarter of the 17th century when it was a fashionable residential location. Notable residents include William Connolly , builder of Castletown house and one of the Richest men in the country at the time. By the middle of the 18th Century, Capel Street had become one of Dublin's premier commercial streets, lined with a wide variety of shops , taverns and traders. In 1894 No. 3 was acquired by John Lemass. The Lemass family also leased No.2 Capel street and operated a clothing outfitters shop there until 1950. Among the children of John Lemass that were raised in the family home over the shop at No. 3 was Sean Lemass , one of Irelands most respected statesmen and Taoiseach from 1957- 1966.
