The first dispensary doctor to occupy the residence was Dr. John Crowley, who served Ballycastle from 1907 until 1934. Dr. Crowley later became a notable figure in Irish history, being elected to the First Dáil in 1918 as a Teachta Dála. A commemorative monument within the grounds pays tribute to his contribution to both medicine and Irish independence. Several original medical artefacts associated with the property's former use as a doctor's residence and dispensary have also survived and are now held within the Jackie Clarke Museum of Irish History in Ballina. The residence remained in medical use until 1992. Adding further to its fascinating history, a drawing of the property by renowned Irish artist Jack B. Yeats was recently discovered in one of his sketchbooks. Character & Craftsmanship The main house retains many fine original features including high ceilings, original fireplaces, decorative plasterwork, pitch pine doors and architraves, panelled timber doors, sash windows with shutters and generous room proportions. Constructed using stone masonry, Scandinavian pine roof timbers and red engineering brick detailing, the residence reflects the quality of workmanship associated with the Edwardian period.
