Ballybunion is steeped in a long history stretching back to the 14th century when the castle which forms the focal point of the village was erected by the Geraldines. The name of the development (Lia Fail) the Irish for Stone of Destiny, a standing stone in Tara, Co Meath where the kings of Ireland were said to have been crowned.
