Oughterard, on the shores of Lough Corrib, is a delightful historic village situated right at the gateway to the beautiful Connemara Mountains. Its mix of contemporary and well maintained traditional stone-fronted architecture combined with lovely scenery give it the idyllic setting of a small, charming Irish village in which to comfortably reside. The village has an interesting history the Aughnanure Castle, located just outside the village, was built following the Norman Invasion by Walter De Burgh, the First Earl of Ulster, in about 1256. Prior to this the O Flaherty clan had owned a sizeable area from Galway to Clifden on the far west coast, and by the end of the thirteenth century they had reconquered their land and built their tower house on the same site as De Burgh. Lough Corrib, running alongside Oughterard, is the largest lake in the Republic and it not only offers spectacular views, but is also a world-renowned fishing Wild Trout and Atlantic Salmon fishing. There are many lovely trails in the area; indeed the Connemara Mountains, with their rocky landscape, turf field and scattered lakes provide wonderful sights for hillwalkers and nature lovers. Other attractions include the 18-hole Ougherard Golf Course, lake tours, traditional gift shops and work shops, and many more. At the Glengowla Mines you can learn how lead and silver were mined from the roots of the Connemara Mountains in the nineteenth century. The Quiet Man Bridge is located 5 miles past Oughterard, down the Leam Road, which was the setting for the 1950s film The Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen O Hara. There are daily buses going to and from Galway and Clifden. THE HOUSE Rinneroon is a magnificent lakeside property located on the shores of Lough Corrib, fronting onto and overlooking Rinneroon Bay. Set on a sheltered site of approximately 1.4 acres/0.57 hectares of established gardens, it benefits from 140 meters (approx.) of lake frontage, including a timber jetty for boats, and offering breathtaking, panoramic views of the lake and countryside beyond. The residence was built in 1999/2000 and offers a high standard of fit out with comfortable accommodation. Care, thought and attention to detail are evident in the design and fit out of this home. Extending to approximately 4,297 square feet/399 square metres, its rooms are spacious, bright and all take advantage of the glorious lakeside setting with views from many of the rooms over the lake or onto the gardens. There is a delightful sensation of welcome and homeliness within, with bright, spacious well proportioned rooms and the conservatory and games room to the rear. Porcelain tiled floors, pine open-beam ceilings, bay windows and a Jacuzzi bath all add to the contemporary beauty of this marvellous home. A detached garage measuring 475 square feet/45 square meters (approx.) further complements the house offering room for storage as required. THE GARDENS Rinneroon s extensive, mature gardens and grounds have been a labour of love for the present owners who have planned and developed them into the magnificent asset that they are now. The lawns are laid out at the front, down to the lakeshore and to the rear of the property, surrounded by colourful flower and shrub borders. Charmingly tucked away among mature trees and a naturally planted woodland area with water features, and accessed by a variety of walkways and paths, the property is enclosed by discreet hedges. The site is inclusive of a vegetable plot with apple trees, fruit bushes, wood store and raised vegetable beds. The lake frontage, in addition to its far-reaching views, also has an attractive timber gazebo and access dock/jetty.
