DESCRIPTION Driving down the lane to Solas (Irish for Laughter or Light), one is greeted by the huge expanse of water that is Lough Foyle near where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. This lovely property sits on approx. 0.88 Hec (2.17 Acres) of land with gardens to the front and back of the property. The front garden gives direct access to a sandy beach and the shore walk, which leads to neighbouring Moville 2kms away. The views across the Foyle to the majestic mountain of Binevenagh are magical with the colours of the sea and the landscape changing constantly. This family home, built in the 1970’s was purchased by the owners 20 years ago and has served as a delightful holiday home and more recently as a full-time home away from busy city life. A number of cosmetic changes including the renovation of bathrooms and the kitchen has kept this home looking fresh and modern. Planning permission was successfully granted in June 2024 for a complete rebuild. Included in the property is a forested area of native trees and bushes across from the laneway and running behind the neighbouring properties, which provides protection for the wonderful wildlife of Lower Ballybrack. A choice of entry to the house, either through the front or back doorways, takes you into a spacious and brightly lit hallway leading to the main living and kitchen areas. The living/family room has floor to ceiling windows opening onto the decking which runs the entire length along the front of the house. The view from this room is breathtaking all year round with its beautiful sea view and the mountains and hills of County Derry and the Antrim coast beyond. An additional sitting room adjacent to the kitchen, used more recently as a yoga studio/music room, provides a peaceful and quiet space away from the main living areas. Aside from the sea view at the front, the kitchen with its large window, provides a lovely view to the back garden with the apple trees and forested area beyond. Two of the four bedrooms have ensuite shower rooms; the master to the front and the main guest room to the back. The two additional bedrooms share the family bathroom. All three front bedrooms have direct access to the terrace and the outdoor living space, which features a hot tub and outdoor shower. A run down the garden, past its exposed rocky outcrops and into the cool waters of the Foyle is an exhilarating experience, with a return to the heat of the hot tub the reward. LOCATION The historic and rugged Inishowen Peninsula to the North East of Donegal is bordered by Lough Foyle to the East, Lough Swilly to the West, and the Atlantic Ocean to the North. Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point, keeps watch proudly. Inishowen, meaning ‘Isle of Eoghan’, has some of the county’s most beautiful beaches with Culdaff Beach being cited among the world’s best. Kinnagoe Bay is out of this world and of historical significance as the site where the Spanish Armada’s La Trinidad Valencera sank in 1588. The origins of the nearby spectacular Fort of Grianán an Aileach are dated back to 1700 BC. The townland of Lower Ballybrack on the Inishowen Peninsula borders Lough Foyle. Solas is located 1 km from the picturesque fishing port of Greencastle to the North, and 3 kms to the market town of Moville, slightly south. In the ‘olden days’ people would come from the city to enjoy the health benefits of the mfresh air and the sea water, a tradition that survives to this day. “The Bath Green”, a recreational area on the Moville seafront was gifted by the Montgomery family in 1929. Moville is a warm and welcoming town with an excellent community college for pupils aged 11 to 18 years, as well as a number of nursery and primary schools. There is a vibrant traditional music school, a number of theatrical companies, a prolific art scene with many talented artists choosing Moville and the greater Inishowen peninsula as their home. Locally owned restaurants and colourful coffee shops provide space for delicious nourishment and conversation. Inish Adventures provides water sports for the adventurous and the beginner alike, whilst the 18 Hole Greencastle Golf Club, one of Ireland’s oldest, is a joyful experience to play especially when the sun shines and new members and visitors both local and from overseas are welcomed. Greencastle, once one of Ireland’s most important fishing ports, connects Donegal by ferry with Magilligan Point and the Antrim Coast beyond during the spring and summer months. This busy route provides tourists and residents with a delightful and short sea journey across the mouth of the Foyle. World class cruise ships, fishing vessels, sailing yachts, leisure craft and intrepid kayakers compete for space during the busier summer months. A locally-owned charter company provides travel and excursions on high-speed ribs to various destinations upon request, including Portrush, home of the 2025 Open, or a more relaxed day trip to the remote and serene island of Inishtrahull. The highly anticipated “Blessing of the Fleet” and accompanying Greencastle festival are held in August each year, and is a highlight of the Donegal summer calendar. Clonmany, Ballyliffen, Buncrana, Culdaff, Carndonagh and Muff all offer a variety of sporting and musical festivals, with Ballyliffen the host of the 2018 Irish Open, one of Ireland’s finest golfing experiences, plus great restaurants, hotels, and the famous Glenevin waterfall. The proximity to Derry City with its historic Walls, the Peace Bridge, the Guild Hall, Ebrington Barracks, the Millenium Forum, Ulster University’s Magee College, excellent grammar schools, lovely independent shops, renowned shopping centres, the Irish Village, eclectic eateries and not forgetting the Derry Girls’ mural, is a world-class destination for both residents and tourists from around the world to enjoy. City of Derry airport with at present 3 flights daily to Heathrow & connections to the world is approx. 40 minutes’ drive away.
