Location The pretty town of Westport on the shores of Clew Bay in Mayo is one of the most sought-after places to head for a weekend away. The historic Georgian-style town is a lively place that charms people with its tree-lined streets and vibrant pub scene. Although there's a handful of things to do in Westport, the town is a stone's throw from many of the best places to visit in Mayo, which makes it a great base for a road trip. Westport is an old town in the south-east corner of Clew Bay, an inlet in the Atlantic coast of Ireland. Located in County Mayo, it's close to many of the best attractions in this picturesque part of the country, with Croagh Patrick providing a stunning backdrop. Westport is known as a lively and vibrant seaside town. It's been voted as one of the best places to live in Ireland, so it's no surprise that it has a charming appeal to it. You'll find plenty of great pubs and restaurants in the historic centre with tree-lined streets and the peaceful Carrowbeg River flowing through with old stone bridges. Westport's fine location means that you easily explore many of Mayo's best attractions as well as further afield on the Wild Atlantic Way. From Achill Island and Croagh Patrick close to town, to Connemara in Galway further to the south, there's plenty to do from the coast to the tops of mountains. Just 38km south of Westport on the Atlantic coast, Silver Strand beach near Louisburgh is a hidden gem of a beach in Mayo. Located at the mouth of the Killary Fjord, this long sandy beach is one of the most beautiful places anywhere in the country. The beach is popular for swimming with the rocky headlands and high sand dunes offering plenty of shelter for the otherwise wild sea. While it's not lifeguarded, you'll find plenty of parking right by the beach and it can still attract a decent crowd on warm summer days. Perhaps one of the most well-known attractions in Westport town, Westport House is an old estate on the banks of the Carrowbeg River between the town and the Quay area. It was built back in 1730 by the Browne family, with the house and gardens having been welcoming visitors for over 60 years.
