Historic University
Maynooth University was formally established as an autonomous university as recently as 1997, yet traces its origins to the foundation of the Royal College of St. Patrick in 1795, making it, simultaneously, Ireland’s youngest university and one of its oldest educational institutions.
Campus
The Maynooth University campus is laid out in its own extensive grounds in rural surroundings, and is divided between an older complex of nineteenth century buildings and a modern complex of teaching, research, accommodation, and support facilities.
Library
The Russell Library houses the historical collections of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth which was founded in 1795 as a seminary for the education of Irish priests. The reading room was designed by renowned British architect and designer Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) and completed in the year 1861. The Russell Library contains approximately 34,000 printed works dating back to the 16th century.
Amenities
Sports
Clubs on campus include those for rugby, gaelic football, hurling & camogie, judo, badminton, swimming, kickboxing, tennis, archery, trampoline, , golf and skiing amongst others. Most of the universities clubs take part in intervarsity competition to some degree.
Student Life
Maynooth University has a vibrant society scene. There is a colourful history of drama and theatre at NUI Maynooth, which can be traced back to eminent alumni such as Brian Friel (1948) and faculty such as internationally renowned playwright Frank McGuinnes.
Students’ Union
The Students’ Union is run for students by students. It’s the place to go if you have a query or need some extra support, as well as having lost of extra information pertaining to education and welfare.
Public Transport
Bus
Maynooth is served by two Dublin Bus routes – the 66 and the 67. Both of these buses depart from Merrion Square in Dublin and run frequent services to the town. The 66x is an express service. Bus Éireann operates daily services from: Athlone, Ballina, Galway, Longford, Mullingar, Sligo, Tuam and Westport.
Train
Maynooth lies on the Western Suburban railway line which serves the four Dublin city centre stations (Pearse Station, Tara St, Connolly Station and Docklands) as well as twelve other suburban stations; Drumcondra, Broombridge, Ashtown, Navan Rd. Parkway, Castleknock, Coolmine, Clonsilla, Hansfield, Dunboyne, M3 Parkway, Leixlip Confey and Leixlip Louisa Bridge.
