HISTORIC CASTLE IN HEART OF DUNDRUM Churches Estate Agents are honoured to present the sale of a historic South Dublin landmark. Dundrum Castle has its origins in the 14th century, when the Fitzwiliams took possession of the lands around Dundrum and erected a castle here. During the rebellion of the 1640’s the Castle of Dundrum fell into disrepair, but was later restored in the 1650s, It was last occupied in the late 18th century, when the family built the grand Dundrum Manor House next door. This was demolished in the 1990s and apartments built on the remainder of the site. Dundrum Castle today retains a site of 0.3 acres, fenced and enclosed by substantial retaining walls, and access via electric gates. The partly sloped site provides plentiful area around the main castle for landscaping and development. The Castle itself is a three storey ruin, built around 2 main square grand halls. At ground level, a grand fire hearth is still existing in the stone walls, and several impressive arch window bays over many levels. The Castle was long owned by David Newman Johnson, long time inspector with the Office of Public Works and specialist at restoring many of Ireland's historic castles. In the 1990s excavations were carried out and then it was David's intension to restore the Castle to inhabitable condition. We understand Dublin Planning and Council offices have previously been open to the Castle being restored but we invite prospective purchasers to seek advice and consultation on the planning potential of the Castle and site.
