36th Lock House, Lakenstown, Ballynacargy, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath

3 Bed

2 Bath

  • Sale Type: For Sale by Private Treaty
EIRCODE - N91 AN80. The 36th Lock House, N91 AN80, is wonderful example of an early 19th Century Royal Canal Lock-House. Originally a one storey over basement residence, this beautiful home has been tastefully renovated and extended upward & outward to provide spacious family accommodation over 3 floors. Set on c.1.5 acres of mature landscaped grounds and with the stunning Royal Canal as a unique vista, viewing is highly recommended. History The Royal Canal links the River Liffey in Dublin to the River Shannon in Longford. It is 145 kilometers in length and winds its way through the North Dublin suburbs, the green pastures of Kildare, Meath and Westmeath, through the town of Mullingar and on through Co. Longford and down into Richmond Harbour in the village of Clondra. Rising out of Dublin through a series of 26 locks it reaches the summit level (a height of about 94 m above sea level) near Mullingar and then descends a further 20 locks to its destination in Richmond Harbour. Lough Owel in Co. Westmeath is the main water supply for the canal. The 36th Lock House was constructed in the early 1800€TM with Lock-keepers living on site to keep a close eye on passing traffic and to control the water levels of the locks and levels (the sections of the canal between the locks). Many of these lock-houses were designed by Thomas Omer, a Dutch canal engineer, who worked on most Irish canals during the 1750s and 1760s and follow a broadly similar design. Viewing Strictly by Appointment only.
