Dunboy Castle (Irish: Caisleán Dhún Baoi) is a ruined castle on the Beara Peninsula in south-west Ireland near the town of Castletownbere. It was a stronghold of the O'Sullivan Bere, a Gaelic clan leader and 'Chief of Dunboy', and was built to guard and defend the harbour of Berehaven. Its presence enabled O'Sullivan Bere to control the sea fisheries off the Irish coast and collect taxes from Irish and continental European fishing vessels sheltering in the haven. It was also a centre for the import/export trade to and from the continent. Today, much of the castle is destroyed but the ruins are open to the public. Dunboy Castle was the scene of the noted Siege of Dunboy in the summer of 1602 which ultimately led to its destruction and the breaking of the power of the O'Sullivan Bere. At that time Donal Cam O'Sullivan Bere was in rebellion against the English crown, and Elizabeth I had sent a 5000-strong army under the command of Sir George Carew to suppress the insurgents. Even with its small garrison of 143 men, Dunboy Castle was thought to be impregnable but following a fierce artillery bombardment the walls were smashed and after some desperate hand-to-hand fighting amid the rubble the defenders were finally overcome. The 58 survivors of the two-week siege were executed in the nearby market square. Puxley Castle- The 19th-century manor house, built near the ruins of Dunboy Castle, was once one of the most magnificent addresses in the country, home to generations of the Puxley family- While the property undertook extensive renovation in 2000's with plans for a 6 Star Hotel- right now the vast stone arches, galleries and picture windows of Puxley Manor still exist in ghostly silence; the only visitors are the odd sheep or cow. The Beara-Breifne Way is inspired by the legendary 17th-Century March of Dónal Cam O’Sullivan Beare He was the last great Chieftain of West Cork and South Kerry and the Beara-Breifne Way – Ireland’s longest national waymarked trail – follows the fourteen-day march taken by Dónal Cam and his one thousand supporters in 1603. The Way runs almost the length of the country and takes the walker and cyclist to some of its most beautiful and least explored areas; along the coast of the Beara Peninsula, across six mountain ranges, along the banks of the River Shannon and through the lake regions of Roscommon and Leitrim. The landscape contains an extraordinary variety of heritage sites – prehistoric features, castle ruins and religious and battle sites – many of which bear witness to the march of four hundred years ago. Located 10 minutes from Castletownbere - a popular residential location within the natural area of the Beara Penninsula. The property's views of the Harbour make it an attractive opportunity to acquire a home on the Wild Atlantic Way As a regionally significant fishing port, Castletownbere plays a crucial role in the local economy. In addition to its maritime prominence, Castletownbere serves as a vital commercial and retail centre for the surrounding region. The town offers a diverse range of local services and amenities, ensuring that residents and visitors alike have access to everything they need. From quaint shops and cafés to markets and supermarkets, Castletownbere caters for all your shopping needs. But Castletownbere offers more than just practical amenities and events; it also boasts an array of natural wonders and outdoor activities. The Beara Peninsula is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering breathtaking landscapes, rugged coastlines, and stunning hiking trails. From scenic walks along the shore to adventurous treks through the mountains, Castletownbere and its surroundings provide endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.
