A short history of Castleton...

Castleton constitutes a major part of the house described as Sandymount Castle on early ordnance
maps, Taylor' s Map of 1828.

Originally an 18th century house, which was fashionably Gothicized in 1830' s, with the addition of battlements, cloister and turrets, Sandymount Castle appears with extensive gardens including a lake and avenue of trees stretching down to the sea front, on a Pembroke estate map of 1831.

In the estate map of 1851 the plots - house and garden - bear the name of Robert Corbet, uncle of
John Butler Yeats (1839 -1922), and grand uncle to the poet W.B. Yeats (1865-1839).

Castleton in The Corbets' time is captured in a family photograph with top hatted gentlemen and crinolined ladies lounging on the lawn, outside the door into the main house, surrounded by lush green foliage giving us a small view into Robert Corbet' s love of gardening documented by John Butler Yeats;

'' Before I was born, he bought or leased, I never know which it was, Sandymount Castle, and then began creating all around him beautiful gardens...Every morning he rose early, and would wander all over the grounds, sometimes with a small saw and hatchet, making among the trees what he called ' visitas' . He employed four or five gardeners; and as long as I knew Sandymount Castle, none of these men ever left him and no one ever interfered with them. So treated, they were gentle, pleasant and diligent, and gardens were lovely.' ' JBY

John Butler Yeats had a great love of the place and spent much of his time here, particularly during his Trinity days. So much so that when Robert Corbet sadly met with bankruptcy and had to leave the house and gardens, John Butler Yeats did not care to remain in Dublin (see initials and year engraved in turret)

John Butler Yeats spoke constantly to his children of The Corbets, of a turreted house, gardens where deer ran free and a pond with ducks and swans, with an island to which two eagles were chained. John Butler Yeats often read Morris' 'Golden Wings' to young Willie saying it made him think of that old house where he had been very happy. The verses ran in the Williams head for years, securing for him the best description of happiness in the world.

At the right time of year.

In 1981 an extension was added, designed by Niall Montgomery, who wrote of it;

'' In agonised dialectic around the ideal of an invisible architecture, owners and architects arrive at a compromise built in the form of an atrium embraced by little pavilions dedicated to play and relaxation, opening, internally on to a small paved courtyard, externally on to the garden, still spacious, if now bereft of the river, pond, island and deer park of the 19th century.

Double-pitched, wide-eaved roofs of natural slates shelter the new wings and are carried on double walls of concrete block, insulated, plastered externally to echo the finish of the main building, fenestrated with those characteristic Dublin ' patent' reveals as architecturally expressive as the word
'patent' is etymologically obscure.' '
